Self-Reliance Response

Emerson believes society is like a common wave in the ocean. In the ocean anyone can make a wave but there is always that one wave that will make a difference and change in a society. One person, one pebble, in the ocean can make a huge difference. If that one pebble looks within itself it could make a difference in the ocean. Emerson wants people to look within themselves and know that they have true knowledge and can make a difference.
A person should define themselves in a society by showing that they can do great things and make a difference. If an individual looks within themselves and knows who they are and know that they could do things that other people cannot. Then they should show everyone what they could do and maybe people would do the same by looking within. "To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men-that is genius " (19 Emerson)

I agree with what you wrote. Emerson definitely believes in individuality rather than conformity. The metaphorical connection you made between Emerson's thoughts and a wave in the ocean was really interesting, and onet that I had never thought of before. One individual in society can truly make a difference.

  2. I like your metaphor on how one tiny pebble can make a big wave in the ocean. It really helps me picture how an individual thinking for itself can make great changes in society.
